RPG games are fundamental to the history of video games. Their representations, since its first installments inspired by Dungeons & Dragons to the establishment of subgenres, are full of cultural influences and styles previously established by game franchises as early as the 1980s. The influence wielded through decades enabled many developers and fans to create their own games, mixing innovative ideas and premises to elements and mechanics already popular within the genre. This paper, supported by discussions and research in the Game Studies field, aims to analyze Mandinga: A Tale of Banzo, a Brazilian historical game. Our main hypotheses lie in the belief that, due to its clear inspirations, Mandinga belongs to the JRPG subgenre, with historical and mythological representations relevant to the watchful and analytical eye of historians.
