This bibliographic investigation is part of the field of History of Mathematics Education (Hem), having as its theme “authenticity of digital files”. The objective of the article is to investigate the use of digital files in research in the field of Hem, guided by the following research problem: How have digital files been used as empirical sources in Hem's research? For this, the text was based on Duranti (1994) to enhance the discussion about the characteristics which constitute an archive. Through the analysis of the works developed in the field of Hem, it is inferred that the footnote is a very valuable instrument to authenticate the use of a digital file in a historical narrative.
