This paper explores the concept of the mediatization of culture through a review and analysis of media theories. Through it I argue that existing approaches clarify important aspects of media culture, although they are unable to provide an adequate basis for theoretically and empirically grounded research on the relations between media and society. In order to contribute to the construction of a theoretical and methodological perspective on the increasing omnipresence and shaping forces of communication, I make a more precise distinction between the concepts of mediation and mediatization, moving away from the latter to questions involving media logic(s) and recognizing its character as a metaprocess.
