Internet Addiction Test Scores and Digital Use Patterns Among Technical and Higher Education Students

Abstract

This article investigates problematic internet use and digital use patterns among technical and higher education students by relating Internet Addiction Test (IAT) scores to the frequency of use of digital platforms. A descriptive survey was conducted with a non-probability convenience sample of 93 students, with data collected in person through an electronic form. Normal use predominated (69.9%), followed by mild (26.9%) and moderate dependence (3.2%). TikTok showed higher usage intensity in the higher IAT score ranges. The study contributes by indicating that interpretation of the instrument should consider the platforms used and structural conditions of digital access.

Professor do Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Sertão Pernambucano (IFSertão-PE), Campus Petrolina. Doutor (2023) e Mestre (2014) em Ecologia Humana pela Universidade do Estado da Bahia (UNEB), graduado em Pedagogia (UNEB, 2004) e graduando em Psicologia (FACAPE, ingresso 2026). Desenvolve pesquisas nas áreas de Educação, Cultura Digital e Cibercultura, Jogos Digitais e Dependência Digital. Líder do CODEC Comunidade de Pesquisa em Cultura Digital, Ecologias e Computação, coordenando a linha de Humanidades Digitais. Membro fundador da Sociedade Brasileira de Ecologia Humana (SABEH) e membro do conselho da Society for Human Ecology. Foi Pró-reitor de Extensão e Cultura do IFSertão-PE (20162019), Diretor de Cultura do Município de Senhor do Bonfim (2002-2008) e Representante Territorial de Cultura da SECULT/BA (20082009).
