This article examines taboo and transgression in Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla, bringing Georges Bataille’s account of eroticism into dialogue with the history of sexuality and gender relations. A historical close reading of intimacy, illness and execution reveals a struggle over authority concerning Laura’s body and narrative. We argue that the guardians’ order counters the vampire’s violence through legitimized violence, without eliminating the ambivalence of desire from the narrator’s memory. Reading the fiction alongside its publishing context and contemporary debates on women’s subjection historicizes this tension. The work’s digital circulation then opens a research perspective on adaptations and communities of reception.
